Improving Patient Adherence in Schizophrenia: Rationale for Treatment Selection to Prevent Inappropriate Switching

Login or registration is required to access this course.

System Requirements

Program Description
Current data indicate that schizophrenia continues to be a highly prevalent disorder with high relapse rates. Patients with schizophrenia continue to suffer both on a personal and a societal level. Their quality of life remains poor and the high relapse rates dramatically impact both direct and indirect healthcare costs. Even though new therapies continue to emerge, with theoretically-improved safety profiles, nonadherence with medication continues to be an issue.

Learning Objectives
By participating in this activity, you will be able to:

  • State three factors that contribute to nonadherence and the impact of nonadherence on healthcare outcomes
  • Describe the impact of nonadherence on functional outcomes and quality of life in patients with schizophrenia
  • Identify five factors that contribute to the rationale for treatment selection and methods to prevent inappropriate switching to improve adherence and long-term outcomes in patients with schizophrenia

Who Will Benefit
This activity was designed to meet the continuing education needs of psychiatrists and other physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, psychiatric nurses and advanced practice nurses. Other mental health professionals may find this activity informative and should check with their state licensing and certification boards to determine if it meets their continuing education requirements.
