Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and associated choroidal neovascularization (CNV), retinitis pigmentosa, and other diseases of the retina are topics of great interest within the ophthalmology community. Despite great strides in the treatment of neovascular AMD, the disease still ranks as the leading cause of blindness in the elderly population. This issue of The Ophthalmology Report: Advances in Retinal Science & Therapeutics, based on selected presentations made at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), held May 3 to May 7 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, summarizes new insights into the development of retinal disease from various imaging and functional studies, discusses the relationship between retinal structure and function, and reviews clinical trials of gene therapy for Leber congenital amaurosis. In addition, this issue summarizes the outcomes of recent studies presented at ARVO on administering ranibizumab to different subpopulations of patients with neovascular AMD and compares monthly versus as-needed scheduling of maintenance ranibizumab therapy.
